e-Prescribing: An Important Part of Medication Safety
Prescribers
PrescribeIT® is Canada’s answer to the safe and secure transmission of prescriptions.
Canada Health Infoway is working with Health Canada, the provinces and territories, and industry stakeholders to operate and maintain PrescribeIT®, a national e-prescribing service. PrescribeIT® will be available across the country enabling prescribers to electronically transmit a prescription to a patient’s pharmacy of choice.
PrescribeIT® is being integrated into EMR systems, which means there will be little change to medical clinic prescribing workflows. PrescribeIT® will be as easy to use as printing or auto-faxing prescriptions from an EMR, but more secure and safer for patients. It will also enhance communication with pharmacists by replacing fax or phone calls with secure messaging. e-Prescribing supports better health outcomes through the improvement of first-fill or primary adherence (the act of filling a new, first-time prescription), and improves patient safety and reduces the fraud and misuse of prescriptions. In fact, PrescribeIT® is part of Canada’s action plan on opioid misuse.
